Understanding Daily Short Volume
FINRA's Daily Short Sale Volume files provide a critical look at the flow of short selling activity in the US equity markets. Unlike bi-weekly short interest reports, which capture open positions, these files track the number of shares marked short on a daily basis. This data is essential for identifying spikes in short-selling pressure that occur during normal market hours.
Data Accessibility
FINRA publishes these files no later than 6:00:00pm ET on the trade date. The data includes aggregated volume for trades reported to TRFs, the ADF, and the ORF. By analyzing this daily flow, traders can identify periods of intense short-selling activity that may precede larger shifts in open interest or indicate temporary market sentiment changes.
