The Official Standard
FINRA publishes consolidated short interest data twice per month. This data reflects the aggregate short positions held by market participants at a specific moment in time on two discrete settlement dates. Because of the reporting lag, this data is often 8-10 business days old by the time it reaches the public.
Why It Matters
Despite the delay, this remains the 'gold standard' for verifying the actual size of open short positions. While intraday estimates from providers like Ortex are excellent for sentiment and momentum, the official FINRA print is the definitive record used for regulatory and institutional compliance. Traders should use the official data to anchor their analysis while using real-time flow data to track daily changes.
