Transparency in Short Selling
FINRA continues to provide critical transparency through its Daily Short Sale Volume Files. These files aggregate volume by security for all short sale trades executed and reported to a Trade Reporting Facility (TRF), the Alternative Display Facility (ADF), or the Over-the-Counter Reporting Facility (ORF). This data is essential for analysts looking to track the flow of short-selling pressure on a daily basis.
Flow vs. Position
It is vital for market participants to distinguish between this daily volume data and official short interest reports. Daily short volume represents the number of shares marked short on a given day—a measure of flow. In contrast, short interest represents the total number of open short positions, which is reported by exchanges on a bi-weekly basis. By combining these two data sets, analysts can better understand both the immediate sentiment and the long-term positioning of market participants.
